How to Prep Your Gutters for Reno's Monsoon Season

Reno's monsoon season runs roughly July through September — and it catches a lot of homeowners off guard. The Great Basin monsoon can dump an inch of rain in 30 minutes on a city that only averages 7 inches all year. Gutters that seem fine the rest of the year can completely overwhelm in a monsoon downpour.

Why Monsoon Rain Is Hard on Reno Gutters

Unlike the Pacific storms that define most of Nevada's annual precipitation, monsoon rain comes from the south — the remnants of moisture systems pushing up from the Gulf of California. It falls fast, hard, and often from an angle that pushes water against fascia boards and up under roof edges. Gutters that are merely "okay" most of the year can fail spectacularly.

The problems we see most often after major monsoon events:

  • Gutters overflowing because dry-summer debris blocked outlets
  • Downspouts backing up because buried drain lines are clogged
  • Gutters pulling away from fascia under water weight
  • Foundation erosion from improperly directed downspout flow

Your Pre-Monsoon Gutter Checklist

1. Clean gutters and flush downspouts

The dry summer (May–June) deposits wind-blown dust and debris into gutters. Flush every section with a garden hose, then confirm downspouts run clear by watching for flow at the bottom. If a downspout barely trickles, it needs clearing before monsoon hits.

2. Check hanger tightness

Walk around your home and visually check that gutters sit tight against the fascia. Any section that's pulled away even slightly will get worse — and potentially fail completely — under the extra water weight of a monsoon deluge. Re-anchor any loose sections or call us to do it properly.

3. Inspect end caps and miters

The corners and end caps of sectional gutters can separate in Reno's extreme heat (110°F metal temps in August). Run a hose along each gutter and look for drips at joints, corners, and end caps. Re-seal any gaps with gutter sealant designed for aluminum.

4. Confirm downspout termination points

Walk around the perimeter of your home right after the first monsoon rain. Is water depositing anywhere within 3 feet of the foundation? If so, add a downspout extension or have us route the discharge further from the home. This single step prevents the most common monsoon-related foundation damage we see.

5. Check buried drain lines

If you have underground downspout drains, flush them with a hose now, not after they've backed up mid-storm. Roots and debris can clog underground lines between seasons.

When to Call a Pro Before Monsoon Season

If your gutters are more than 10 years old, sagging in any section, or have had performance problems in past storms — schedule a professional inspection and cleaning in June. Better to address issues proactively than to call us urgently during a July monsoon when the schedule is packed. Book your pre-monsoon checkup here.
